Process
In the beginning of the school year, I realized that the school community needed a library that works like a magnet. I wanted to see if I could attract patrons to read and research all on their own! I wondered if I could keep patrons coming in for independent inquiry/research and show their love for reading. I thought the library was under utilized. Students weren't drawn to do independent work at the library. Students came to the library mostly during scheduled time! I wondered: Can I entice them to come outside of their schedule? Will students want to come on their own to the library, and be excited about being there? How was I going to do this? Well, one day Evan and JoAnne pitched the Keala'ula Team Project idea to our faculty, and I thought this is it, so I applied. Thank goodness I was chosen because being in Keala'ula inspired me to explore my ideas for improving the library, and be intentional about E 'ola and child centered learning.
Then in January, I submitted my action research question as stated below:
What does a 21st century elementary school library "look like," and how does it "function" with a world class Hawaiian culture based education?
